Uhm... interesting...

The scenario you mention is really the "mainstream" scenario in our test matrix before we release a new version of both F# and F# Powerpack.

In order for us to understand what is going on, it would be useful if you could answer the following questions:

- What OS are you using? Include OS language, architecture and service pack.

- If the OS is Vista or greater, were you asked to run the MSI elevated, assuming UAC is on on your machine?

- What products did you have installed? Visual Studio 2008? NetFx2.0 only (no VS)? NetFx3.5 (no VS)? Visual Studio 2010?

- Was any previous version of either F# or F# PowerPack present on the machine at the time of the installation? What version?

- If the answer to the above question is "No", was any previous version of either F# of F# PowerPack ever *uninstalled* from that machine?

- Could you share the MSI log files? You should find them under %TEMP% with some funny name like MSIb311f9.log (if you see more of such files, please include them all - you can filter out the ones that do not have the "FSharp" string in them...)

- Are any of your "Special Folders" redirected to file shares? Some companies provide this kind of service, so it could be interesting to know...

Feel free to followup with answer by sending e/mail and hopefully a .zip file with the logs to mailto:fsbugs

Hopefully, we'll be able to find out what is going on and get you going with F# :)

(retrying - hopefully this time the formatting is preserved... :))

I was a little careless with the original post. Here's the information that might help.

1. Windows XP SP3 32bit.
2. I have one computer with both VS2008 and VS2010 and another only VS2008, both had the installation problem.
3. No previous version of F#/powerpack.
4. It's a clean installation; there wasn't any uninstalled version.
5. I'll try to find the log files when I go back to the office.
6. The user profiles are shared (on the file server, roaming profiles).

Thanks for the prompt response.

The log file says

Error 1324. The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid character.
