According to a talk given by John Robbins from Wintellect, it's not making optimizations--it's hiding menu options. According to him, you're best off to pick "General Development" or whatever that setting is called. Picking "General Development" insures that none of the menus are hidden.

Thanks, Onorio. I've switched over to using the general setting and it's fine so far.

When I mentioned potential optimisations, I wasn't thinking of optimisations the compilers would make, but rather UI optimisations made with respect to text editor behaviour, menu layout, key bindings, etc. I should have worded this more clearly.

Just to mention it: do yourself a favor and DON'T use the vb.net settings - not only are some of the key-mappings completly different to all the other settings - no you will be left with a crippeled UI where you can't even find the search-textbox (or so I think I remember).

And to answer your first question: for F# it won't matter much.
