I'm not an expert on ADO.NET. But, I think they fill different niches. I think of ADO.NET as an O/R mapping strategy, and LINQ as a data-use mapping.

Hi there

F# programmers often like to learn things "from the ground up", and ADO.NET is a great example of where this can be useful, e.g. in learning more about how making a connection to a database really works. So yes, I personally gained by learning ADO.NET, and I've seen some very successful F# projects use it extensively.
