I'm working on making Fluent NHibernate look nicer with F#. Part of this is trying to reduce the tons of "|> ignore" that are littered around my mappings.
Just to suggest a different angle: have you considered turning the fluent interface into a CPS like functional interface?The thought occurred to me because I am doing the reverse for FsCheck: I'm turning the property combinators into a fluent interface ( something like Spec.For(Any.OfType<int>()).Assert(...).Collect(...) ). Essentially you convert pipes into dots or vice versa.I need to catch a plane so that's all I have time for right now, sorry :)

The fluent interface works very succintly for the most part, syntax wise. It's still wierd as it's changing global state and ignoring return values, but whatever looks pretty for this works :).
I considered extending obj with an Ignore member, but that's sorta invasive.
I think that CPS style would just add overhead from the added lambdas and whatnot, no?
Probably CPS style is not the best way to describe what I meant (to put it mildly). I was thinking of a "transformational" style, where each function takes some arguments, and transforms a given mapping into a new one:

Usually accompanied by a "source function" to produce an inital mapping, and a "destination function" which consumes a mapping and turns it in this case presumably into a ClassMap type. The different transformation functions can be chained nicely using the pipe operator.From a typing point of view, it's clearer to see what's going on. Also, because you don't rely on global mutable state, it's much easier to reuse certain transformations (e.g. the many to many transform with the specific options you gave could be a user-defined transformation function, which seems harder to encapsulate in the flient approach, especially with the subclassing).Kurt
Not sure what you're asking in your final question, and I'm also unfamiliar with the NHibernate APIs, so it's hard to offer good advice. But you're right that 'fluent' imperative interfaces often mess with functional programming (I noted this in an aside here: [link:stackoverflow.com]). I think perhaps you might want to expose <i>only <i>the non-fluent (always auto-ignore) methods from your code if it's having effects on the receiver object, but a brief example that shows what this is and how it's used (for those, like me, unfamiliar with NHibernate) may help a lot.

Yes, the fact it's NHibernate isn't too related actually. It's more for "fluent" interfaces in general. But in this case, what Fluent NHibernate does is lets you subclass a "ClassMap<T>", then call special world-changing methods in the constructor. I documented my first pass at this with F# here: [link:www.atrevido.net]
From their sample "first project", an example mapping looks like this:

While this is pretty good, most of the times, Id, Map, and some others (like Reference) have their return values discarded (but not always). By creating "overloads" that return unit, I can avoid some ignores:

My current idea is to just provide an extra member "IdI" that just calls Id and ignores it, allowing:
This isn't horrible, but is there a nicer way? Is there any way to get an operator to work here without parens?
