This is an interesting problem; your analysis of the state of the world today is good - the language is indeed restrictive here. We are still working to come up with a clean solution for dealing with 'very many recursive entities spanning multiple files' as well as 'recursive entities spanning multiple modules/namespaces'.

Out of curiosity, why can't the compiler simply do a pre-pass to pick up all of the types? Also, why does recursion make this problem any harder?

Because of type inference I suppose.
