I've had this post marked for follow up for a very long time.
The extra tokens get inserted because the final "x" is offside from the offside line for the SeqBlock context for "1", and the Let context.
I've now revised my private copy of the Language spec to include the above example, and done some further work on the text to correctly describe a couple of corner cases.

Hi,
I'm reading F# specification about lightweight syntax option (15.1) and have question about it.
Consider sample:
let x = 1
x
As I understand, the token stream pre-parser works as follow:
1. first token is 'let' then Let context is pushed
2. next token is 'x'
3. next token is '=' in Let context then SeqBlock context is pushed and $begin token is inserted
4. next token is 'x'. It occurs directly on the offside line of Let context then $in token is inserted
So according the algorithm the pre-parsing result is 'let x = $begin 1 $in x'. But it seems strange.
