Thanks, but can the VS Shell be used to create Windows Forms applications which are note IDEs? I thought the shell is for creating custom IDE's which can be integrated into Visual Studio...

The shell is for creating and hosting custom IDE's. It basically allows you to use third-party languages on the .NET platform - like IronPhyton, IronRuby, SML.NET (if that still exist), and F# without having to roll your own editor/IDE.

So you can use VS2008 Shell to develop standalone WinForm applications.

I don't know if and when F# gets finalized if we still can run it on VS2008 Shell, or we have to use the full version of VS2008. In the same fashion that C# and VB.NET only runs in the full version.

BTW: Does anybody else have problems with tab-completion in FSI from within VS2008/VS2005? It stopped working with the CTP - both 1.9.6.0 and 1.9.6.2 - from a standalone instance of FSI it works fine.

Regarding tab-completion, it's not in VFSI, see

To sum up about VS Shell, the Visual Studio 2008 Integrated Shell is basically VS 2008, minus the built-in support for C#, VB, C++, etc - it's just the 'shell' of VS. You can install other language packages in it (like F#). Since the Shell is free, VS Shell + F# install = free VS 2008 version of F#.

And yes, the F# CTP no longer supports VS 2005 - it now requires 2008.

Hope that info helps!
