Generating quotations dynamically

Hi! I'm writing my Master's Degree thesis in F#, building a system to write LINQ-style queries using quotations to define shaders. I suspect this might be quite interesting, since writing shaders requires mastering HLSL (the DirectX GPU language) and moving between visual studio and a different editor. I still am in the early stages of the thesis, but I have already encountered a bit of a problem. Suppose I were to compile the following code to its GPU equivalent:

let f = fun x -> x + 1
let myexpr1 = 
<@
fun x ->

let g = fun x -> x * (x+1)

in (g x) + (f x)

@>
let myexpr2 = 
<@
fun x ->

let h = fun x -> x * (x+1000)

in (h x) + (f x)

The point is that I would like to reuse code like f, but I do not know how (or whether it is possible at all) to dynamically turn f into its quotation, as if I had written

let f = <@fun x -> x + 1@>

Is this possible at all?

this is a very interesting topic! I did some work on translating F# code to GPU code some time ago and I'd be very interested in sharing my experiences with you. I have a very simple example that translates selected F# quotations to HLSL, but unfortunatelly it relies on a component that executes the HLSL that I cannot publish :-(. Can you drop me an email at tomas@tomasp.net, so I can send you what I've got (it's really just a trivial demo, but it should help you finding a good way)?

Regarding your question - yes you can re-use same code on GPU and CPU. The way is to use ReflectedDefinition attribute. If you mark a function with it, you can use it as an ordinary compiled function in your code and also access its quotation at runtime.
