Update:

The F# IRC channel is located on irc.freenode.org in the channel #fsharp. If you don't have an IRC client you like we have made access a bit easier. You can join the channel in a web browser at [link:fpound.net] connection settings and the channel to join are preconfigured, you just need to provide a nickname and the captcha and you're in. We're hovering around 50 users consistently now which is a considerable increase from the 10 or so we had pre-2010 release. Look forward to meeting you there!

In response to the available IRC clients, for windows I would recommend either Xchat or HydraIRC. For *nix I use ScrollZ which is a text based IRC client. It does matter which server you connect too. When you launch your client type the following commands and don't forget the forward slashes:

/server irc.freenode.org

/join #fsharp

You will be joined to *the* F# IRC channel. There are typically 20 or more users here. It is not very active compared with other channels on freenode, such as OCaml. But it is nice to be able to chat with eachother about F#.

Opera (the browser, not the singing) also has a built-in chat client that works. I just selected the FreeNode, Europe server from the dropdown.Haven't chatted in a long while though...

Is there a way to make this thread sticky?

By on 7/23/2008 7:21 AM ()

Most alt.net guys are on irc.freenode.net, as are most developers. Why not create/register an IRC channel there, and call it #fsharp or something?

-- EDIT

I just went there, and it seems there already is a channel called #fsharp there. :)

I've auto-subscribed to the #fsharp channel on irc.freenode.org. Check out the #ocaml channel where and you'll understand what you're missing. If we all go there often, there'll be a critical mass of knowledge percolation!

BTW -- there was a request to keep this thread sticky, can this be accomplished?

What client do you use? Last time I connected to irc was at university and that was about 10 years ago now ...

Don't think this version of community server has a sticky feature. Could be nice to see some "mash up" style integration and have irc messages relayed on a section of the site, but obviously that would be work for the administrator.

Cheers,
Rob

There's a client included with Emacs - just press M-x erc and you are there. Properly set up, Emacs can run edit F# and run FSI too, right beside the chat window.

Any recommendations for non-emacs users?

Also does it matter what server you connect to, just tried a "random server" with mIRC client (which seems a bit over complex) and no one was there.

Cheers,

Rob

If you use Firefox you could use the ChatZilla plugin. I'm not a frequent IRC user, but ChatZilla works for me and is pretty easy to use.

I know there is one on freenode but damn near no one is in there

By on 5/16/2008 5:02 PM ()

Well, I made it my default channels to join, so there will be one more person there when I'm connected! :)
