This does what I want. In general, I'm getting confused with some of the '#light' syntax: some references fail to mention whether or not they are using it.

I've got what's sure to be a dumb question, but I can't seem to figure it out myself.
I've reduced my issue down to a simple scenario. Consider the statement:
> if false then 1 else 2 ;;
val it : int = 2
This works as expected. Now, consider this:
> if false then 1 else let a=2; a;;
I'm trying to bind the value 2 to 'a', and then return it. This always gives me a compilation error, and it's obviously wrong, but I can't seem to find the correct way to do this. How do I group statements like this in conditionals?
