It behaves like a v.Now with get() = ... because it is a v.Now with get() = ..., as is v.Birthday. In the definition if timeline there is no way you can meaningfully have an abstract field in .NET, so it used as a short hand for a property with just a get. You can use reflector [1] to check this if you like.

The excellent example of Probabilistic Workflow in Expert F# alerted me to the fact that member variables are lazy.
For example,

open System;;
type Timeline =
abstract Birthdate : DateTime
abstract Now : DateTime;;
let timeline () =
let birthdate = DateTime.Now
{ new Timeline with
member v.Birthdate = birthdate
member v.Now = DateTime.Now };;
let x = timeline()
x.Birthdate.ToString() // always fixed
x.Now.ToString() // changes at each invocation
To me that's surprising. It's as if
member v.Now = ...
behaves like
member v.Now with get() = ...
Now, I have to check my code to make sure that I don't have any performance issue because of this constant reevaluation.
