StringBuilder.AppendFormat call error

Hi,

I was trying to compile the following code:

member m.formatVarTable () =
    let s1 = new System.Text.StringBuilder () in
    m._vars.Iterate
            (fun key value ->
                s1.AppendFormat ("{0} -> {1}\n", key, value));
    s1.ToString ();

And got the following compilation error:

model.fs(100,23): error: FS0041: No overloads match for method AppendFormat. Some sample overloads and possible errors follow.

Possible overload: 'System.Text.StringBuilder.AppendFormat(string format, obj arg0) : System.Text.StringBuilder'.

Possible overload: 'System.Text.StringBuilder.AppendFormat(string format, obj arg0, obj arg1) : System.Text.StringBuilder'.

Possible overload: 'System.Text.StringBuilder.AppendFormat(string format, obj arg0, obj arg1, obj arg2) : System.Text.StringBuilder'.

Possible overload: 'System.Text.StringBuilder.AppendFormat(string format, obj [] args) : System.Text.StringBuilder'.

Possible overload: 'System.Text.StringBuilder.AppendFormat(System.IFormatProvider provider, string format, obj [] args) : System.Text.StringBuilder'.

The line that gives the error is «s1.AppendFormat ("{0} -> {1}\n", key, value));». I think it should match the second overload indicated in the error message.

Then I tried to change to:

And got:

error: The member or object constructor AppendFormat does not take 1 argument(s). An overload was found taking 2 arguments.

I don't understand why I am getting these error messages or which would be the correrct way to call the member function.

You might want look at F#'s printf functions. The place holders in this are typed so you can avoid the need for boxing:

Hi Robert,

I am not familiar with the Printf functions. Are they described in your book? I ordered the book but my bookstore (in Japan) asked 3 weeks to deliver it, so I am waiting.

The printf functions are covered in the book with details of the meaning of all the place holders and a few examples. The functions are also covered here:

Hi solidstate,

It's impossible to be sure without a compiling example, or at least the type of m._vars value, but it could be that you need to box key and value.

    s1.ToString ();

box'ing will return a heap allocated obj which should have the right type and interop with the dotnet function call.
