Ouch - glad you got this to work. But something is still fishy - you should be able to consume a .NET 4.5 assembly in a .NET 4.5 WebSharper project... Or am I misreading your update?
As it turns out, something else was going on. My assembly had one module adding some extensions to the MS Reactive Extensions. When I removed that module and the references (in my assembly) to the Rx assemblies, I was able to add a v4.5 build to a WebSharper project without breaking WebSharper. I probably screwed up the migration of my assembly from the VS 10 version somehow.

I'm reading Expert F# 3.0 and have reached the WebSharper chapter. Trying to build the Orders project fails when I reference another F# assembly (which I wrote and which has various helper functions/classes). Actually, it seems that the raw assembly builds, but the call to WebSharper.v4.5.exe fails with the message "File does not exist: -r". This problem seems to be caused by merely referencing the assembly; I can compile the project from the book's code without error, but when I add a reference to this assembly the compile breaks.
By the way, I'm using VS Web Express 2012.

Update after further investigation: The root of my problem seems to have been that my assembly targeted v4.5 of .NET. When I referenced it in a WebSharper project, Visual Studio automatically added references to 50 assemblies from the Facades directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\.NETFramework\v4.5\Facades). The full path for each of these assemblies was included on the command line for WebSharper.exe, which apparently got truncated, causing the error (the command line copied from Visual Studio Output window is over 9300 characters, and I believe the max command line for Windows 7 is only 8191).
Anyway, I retargeted my assembly to v4.0, and things are building now.
