So now that the code is open sourced, I wonder if anyone can take a look at the code and give a performance critique. I'm rather at a loss as to what else to try that might make real perf improvements.

So, I just realized my language interpreter written in F# is an 1 - 2 order of magnitudes too slow for real-time software. With a profiler I can see how I could speed it up 4x with lots of hard work, but I wonder if it's worth it. It now appears that I will have write a compiler to fulfill my vision of writing simulations in it.
Is this slowness typical of interpreters that evaluate ASTs directly, or did I just do something gravely wrong?
