User groups, meetup groups, conferences, and various training and developer organizations are listed in the Groups catalog. Any user can create a new user group and become the administrator of that group. Conference and the other forms of organizations are always created initially as user groups and turned into a higher organizational entity.

Creating a new user group

You can create a user group by filling in the data form on the Create group page:

  1. Group name: Enter the name of your group. Example: "The Budapest Functional Programming User Group"
  2. Group URL: The URL suffix relative to the fpish.net site. This group URL must be unique and you will get an error message if there is an existing group with the same URL. Example: "fp-bud".
  3. Group email: Enter the email address for the group's administrator. Example: "admin@fpbud.hu"
  4. Description - as shown in the group's listing: Enter a brief description for your group.
  5. Founded on: Enter the date when your group was formed on. Example: "2011 August 20".

  6. Choose location: Choose whether your group has a new or existing location, or whether it's virtual (online). You can use any existing location that you created and assigned to your previous groups or events.

    • If you select a new location, you need to give it a short description (such as "Microsoft - San Francisco office">), and the location details. Use the Directions textbox to enter detailed directions such as "Turn left on Main Ave.".
  7. Description markup - on your group's page: Enter the description of your group, this will be shown when users navigate to the landing page of your group.
  8. Banner markup (optional) - on your group's page: Enter the markup for the banner of your group's landing page. If you leave this empty, the name of the group will be shown.

  9. Tags (comma-separated): Enter the tags that identify your group. Be sure to put the relevant language tags, and any other that best describes what your group is about.

Once done, click Submit to create your group, and it will appear when users navigate to the Groups catalog.
