type Fred =
    abstract Ethel : int
    default this.Ethel = 5

Though now the asymmetry between the abstract and default definitions is jarring at first. This is an unusual instance of verbosity for F#, to first declare something abstract, then give a default implementation. I got hung up because I expected 'default' would imply abstract.
