I'm not sure this worked with earlier versions of F# - it doesn't work with v1.9.4.17 generating the error:
sprintf s;;
--------^^
stdin(5,8): error FS0001: The type 'string' is not compatible with the type 'Printf.StringFormat<'a>'.

I am not sure how this worked in the earlier versions of F# but why is it I can write
> sprintf "%s"
but not
> let s = "%s"
>sprintf s
the former returns a curried function, while the later throws an exception. If I try to new up a StringFormat object to supply it with I get an invalid cast exception.
