One answer my own question -- I suppose as long as the type inference system wants either a single hardened type or a generic, rather than a OO-like type system that supports a myriad of interfaces over the collection classes, which is hard given that interfces are called explicitly (other then seq<_> which is handled), then overloading slicing, appending, etc., operators will have a cascading effect on type inference.
