One answer my own question -- I suppose as long as the type inference system wants either a single hardened type or a generic, rather than a OO-like type system that supports a myriad of interfaces over the collection classes, which is hard given that interfces are called explicitly (other then seq<_> which is handled), then overloading slicing, appending, etc., operators will have a cascading effect on type inference.

Anyone know why GetSlice is supported by default only for strings/arrays and not for List<_>?
Or why GetSlice doesn't support the ever-so-useful "from the right" negative slice indicies a la Python?
I suppose they can be augmented easily into the the system on a per-app basis, but given the thought that went into F#, I'm wondering if there's a more fundamental reason.
I can understand the argument that seeing a list is O(n) and not O(1) like arrays, that array notation could be deemed "dangerous" - but given that you can now do aList.[x], it seems like Pandora's box is now open and the convenience would be welcome. The same goes for [|1;2|] @ [|3|] = [|1;2;3|] -- as long as you understand the cost, the orthogonality and convenience of the DWIM-factor here are quite useful when needed.
