I'm always annoyed that C# forces me to waste horizontal screen space by writing out "string.Format(..." in full. And I like languages like Python and Powershell that let me use "%" and "-f".

Then I realized I could write:

let (-%) (fmt: string) (arg: obj array) = String.Format(fmt, arg)

But this brings up several issues:

1) I have to write "Hello {0}, {1}" -% [| box "world"; box "John" |]. Yucch.

2) Can I have multiple overloads to -% with

let (-%) (fmt: string), (arg0: obj)

let (-%) (fmt string), (arg0: obj), (arg1: obj)

etc, with arg2, arg3, etc

3) I know F# reserves the "params" keyword, so maybe this can't be done yet. Comments anyone?

4) Why do I need to box "world" and "John"? The compiler, of course, can tell that "world" is-a obj.

And in general, can someone suggest a nice way to define -%, so I can just write

"Hello {0}, {1}" -% ("world", "John")
