As it happens, we had an MSDN Roadshow event here (a couple of MS technology evangelists, tour the region, helping developers leverage existing MS technologies, and introducing new ones), last week. The evolution of patterns, through MVC and MVVM was on the agenda Though well done, I had a bit different take on the pattern evolution. The presentation did layout the idea of conceptual components for data (Model), interface (View) and logic (Controller), as well as for the corresponding MVVM abstractions. However, it seemed that Model was taken more as a data source (RDB, XML, Excel spreadsheet, etc...), than a data structure or schema. Yes, they did leverage a mapping (via O-R/M, or such); but I think missed the point about what what a model is. Where I see the evolution is Model as data structure; then structuring the interface via a View-Model. In other words: MVC might have been D(ata)VC until the advantage of modeling data was realized, to become (D)MVC. From there, to (D)MVMC, as the advantages of structuring the interface were seen. Modeling the controller would complete the evolution: (D)MVMC(M), or more clearly DM-VM-CM. Don't know if just considering that will knock you off track. Rather, i hope it might be something to keep an eye out for as you work through investigations. Good luck with the project, BRN..
