This is the way I would do it too.
Some time ago I posted a proposal for a Clock abstraction that would make this nicer; I might start a PR for it soon.

I really like the MVC abstraction that UI.Next provides. It seems to provide a better way to create "web controls" that are similar to WebForm controls in the .Net event based UI development model. My concern is that I might be violating some sort of design guidelines on how Vars and Views are suppose to be used within the web framework.
For example: inline link with title
In this example, I need to use the javascript SetTimeout function to get Timer events. So is using setters for Vars the correct way to poke the MVC chain? Are there any sort of race conditions that I need to be concerned with? Or is this an intended use case?
